Students will further develop their proficiency in both spoken and written English. They will also learn about English through four carefully designed academic courses which deal with various aspects of the language. These are “Introduction to Literature in English”, “Introduction to Linguistics”, “English Phonetics and Phonology” and “Introductory Stylistics”.

Programme Aims & Features

This programme provides students with the opportunity to strengthen their English language skills and develop their language capabilities through a combination of theoretical and practical studies.

Opportunities for Further Studies

Proficiency in the use of English is a prime requirement for entry into local and overseas universities. The Chan Tat Chee Scholarship in English aims at encouraging students to specialize in the subject. So far six students have been admitted as Edmund Blunden Scholars to the second year of the BA programme at HKU.

Career Prospects

English is an international language and the ability to use it well will be beneficial in whatever career students may choose. If students do well in this programme, they will be ready to compete successfully for satisfying and fulfilling jobs in areas such as commerce and industry, in education, in the arts, in media and communications, in public relations and in the civil service.
