Physical science is an interesting and exciting subject of value in many walks of life. Scientists are continually searching for ways to make advancements in technology to improve life while the principles of modern technology are rooted in Physical Science. Living in an ever-changing world, there is always a need for new technologies to be developed by scientists working collaboratively in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Material Science, Computational Science, Engineering and other fields.
This programme is offered in collaboration with the Faculty of Science of the University of Hong Kong with the aim of providing students with a firm foundation in Physical and Chemical Sciences. The programme includes courses, which cover much of the first-year undergraduate curriculum in Physical Sciences at HKU. It prepares them for a career in a number of relevant fields and for further studies at the university level. The first year of the programme aims to strengthen the students' knowledge of Physics, Mathematics, and Chemistry/Quantitative Analysis. The second year is a university year-one level programme, which focuses on a particular study theme such as Physics, Chemistry, Earth Sciences* or Statistics. All specialism courses in the programme are offered by the Faculty of Science of HKU and all laboratory classes and examinations are conducted at HKU.
* In AD year I studies, students doing College Chemistry I & II can choose Physics Themes, Chemistry Theme or Earth Sciences Theme in AD year II programme; students doing Quantitative Analysis I & II can choose Physics Theme, Earth Sciences Theme or Statistics Theme only.
In addition to the minimum entrance requirements, you are also required to have taken any two of the following AL/AS subjects: Physics, Chemistry, Pure Mathematics or Mathematics and Statistics, or equivalent.
Once students have successfully completed the programme, you will be eligible to study for a Bachelor's Degree. Chemistry, Earth Sciences, Mathematics, Physics, Materials Engineering, Building Engineering, Nursing and Sports Science are among the most popular choices of our students who go on to university.
There is always a great need for people who have qualities such as logical thinking and analytical ability. People with science training are often preferred because of the valuable skills they have acquired. Training in this programme prepares students for a career in the Physical Sciences or related fields and for other careers in Commerce, Law, Finance and Education as well as a career in the Civil Service.
