Changing from a science to a business curriculum was not easy for me. Fortunately, the business knowledge and business enabling technology which I learnt from the Higher Diploma in Business Systems programme have benefited me in my studies at the local university. The course introduced essential knowledge at the right level in business and information technology to students, and lecturers were willing to spend time to help us in our study progress.Apart from study, we also had placement opportunities during the summer holidays. I worked as accounting assistant for a company while some of my classmates worked as junior business analysts for The Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited. I do not attribute my admission to City University to luck but to the efforts of lecturers from HKU SPACE Community College.
Many students consider taking a sub-degree course not a wise alternative. Since I started studying the Higher Diploma in Business Systems programme, I have completely changed my mind. This programme combines fundamental knowledge of both Business and Information Technology. It also emphasises practical work experience which helps students to integrate what they learn with work and daily life. The campus facilities and environment are good,and this has increased my interest in study. During the final year of study, I chose to have a placement and I am proud that I was employed as a programme assistant by Cisco Systems (HK) Ltd. This placement has given me a great opportunity for strengthening my communication and analytical skills.
Studying in HKU SPACE Community College has started a new page of my life. I did not know much about business studies and technologies since I was an arts student in secondary school. However, over these few months in the College, I have learnt a great deal from this comprehensive programme, not only those intangible business theories but also their applications in the real world. The balanced syllabus enables me to pursue further education in either the business or Information Systems field. I have also gained a new perspective on life and see the outside world in a different prospective.
Besides, the lecturers are very patient and very willing to give a hand when I encounter difficulties in either academic matters or my college life. These have all equipped me with a firm foundation of knowledge for challenges in my future studies and careers.
