Hong Kong has a huge and continuous demand for professionals who can communicate, in speech and writing, between Chinese and English effectively. People in almost all professions have to be more or less involved in translating Chinese and English. A solid foundation in, and the ability to, use the two languages are important assets for career advancement and further studies.
This programme aims to equip students with the practical knowledge of translation and hands-on expertise at a para-professional level as well as prepare them for employment. Apart from translation skills in various practical fields, such as commercial and financial translation and legal translation, students will get a chance to try different modes of interpretation, such as at-sight interpretation, consecutive interpretation and simultaneous interpretation.
Though the programme is practical in preparing students for employment, those who would like to further their studies can also benefit from the programme, which provides them with a solid language foundation for further studies in local or overseas universities.
Graduates can apply for further degree study in related disciplines such as translation, language studies and literature at local universities through Non-JUPAS.
Graduates are also eligible for admission to the following full-time top-up degree programmes offered locally by HKU SPACE Centre for International Degree Programmes in collaboration with the following universities:
Graduates of the programme can seek employment at entry level in various fields that require good English and Chinese proficiency and translation skills, such as advertising, the media, journalism, publishing, editing, translation, public relations, tourism, marketing and promotion in both the public and private sectors.
In addition to the minimum entrance requirements, you are also required to have obtained Grade D or above in HKASL Use of English and Grade E or above in HKASL Chinese Language and Culture, or equivalent.
