MBA Programme 10th Anniversary Celebration Party

Since March 2001, HKUSPACE has been delivering an MBA in International Management Programme in collaboration with Royal Holloway School of Management, University of London, preparing countless students to be world-class leaders and managers, as well as experts in their respective fields. Over the years, more than 350 professionals have graduated and there are about 300 students currently studying in the programme. Some of them gathered in a special evening to share with us their feelings and experience while teachers gave them their warmest blessings.

Close Partnership of Two Big Systems

The celebration party is not just a gathering, as this year also marks the 10 th Anniversary of the programme. Mr Albert Hung, Acting Head of College of Business and Finance, HKU SPACE and Dr Hari, MBA Director (HK) and Senior Lecturer of Royal Holloway School of Management, University of London were invited to give us an opening speech. Mr Albert Hung said, “My relationship with the MBA programme started in 2002, when I was the programme Manager responsible for the daily operation. In good times and bad, I have been interacting with teachers and students. Over time, I witnessed the programme progressed while had a close partnership built with Dr Hari. I am feeling proud to see all of you achieving so much, standing tall here tonight as MBA graduates.”

Albert also revealed that the night was the final official appearance of Dr Hari, because he will step down from his position afterwards. “That said, we are happy to see that our linkage with Dr Hari will not be broken as he will still be one of the teachers of the programme.” Albert added.

A Milestone is the Beginning of Another Journey

Dr Hari also remarked that he felt privileged to be involved in this programme right from the start. He said, “It is remarkable to see the programme grow and flourished during the past 10 years. This sharing party is not just a yardstick of what we have attained in the past, but it also represented the beginning of another 10 or 20 years of future achievements. It was wonderful and enjoyable working with the colleagues in HKU SPACE and I would like to give my hearty thanks to all of you who have been contributing to the continual growth of the programme. I am sure the annual dinner to be held next year would also be a great success too.”

Mike Wong, the CEO of the Chamber of HK Listed Companies, was invited to speak for the joyous occasion. He said, “Let me congratulate those of you who will be an MBA graduate of this programme, in that many are expected to be the future leaders who will take our economy forward. To be a part-time student having a full-time job is no easy task. But the experience gained, especially through the dynamics of group work, will be valuable for a lifetime. I hope you will continue your pursuits and be a part in an MBA programme that will even be more successful for many more decades to come.”

    Truly International Perspective

Apart from the 9 compulsory modules and 4 extra elective modules, students of the MBA programme also need to complete a group project plenary session and a compulsory research course and project. That is exactly what Mr Mike Wong described as an exchange of thoughts and thinking. Royal Holloway's particular strength in international and comparative business research means that students will get a truly international perspective, rather than one that is solely relevant for one country. The wide range of electives allows them to build a programme to meet your career objectives.

Other lecturers shared their views one by one afterwards. Dr Fred Luk who started teaching the course in 2005 highlighted that friendship is one of the most valuable things for both teachers and students. Dr Michael Chan also remarked that instead of teaching, he sees his work as sharing with a group of professionals from different sectors. Dr David Roper reminded us the need to be socially conscious and keep corporate social responsibilities in mind always.

    Solutions Always Outnumber Obstacles

Programme Leader Dr Wai Wan came onto the stage and expressed her thanks towards everyone who has helped. She described the programme as a big success achieved by joined hands of two big systems. Dr Wan said, “The path to wisdom and knowledge may be tough but surely worthwhile. There is a saying 'Solutions always outnumber obstacles'. I have been a believer of this positive thinking at all times since I took up the role as the programme leader, and was especially overwhelmed with joy to see you in the graduation party held in Luk Yau Hall last year. That was the happiest moment which makes all hardships trivial.”
