  • Course Description

    Tourism is one of the world's largest and fastest growing industries, and a major provider of employment opportunities both in Hong Kong, Asia and worldwide. This management-based programme will prepare students for employment in the public or private sectors, managing, developing and planning tourism resources at a junior to middle management level.

    This programme will introduce to future marketers, managers and other professionals in tourism the necessary skills, abilities and knowledge to understand the dynamics of the tourism industry, its interface with art, culture, and recreation, and of the development of tourism experiences at destinations.

    This 2 year part-time programme will comprise 12 modules focusing on central themes in tourism management and its application to practice. On satisfactory completion of the 12 subjects the Advanced Diploma in Tourism Management will be awarded.

  • Programme Structure

    There are 12 modules, each lasting 36 hours, and focusing on tourism management and its application to practice:

    • Introduction to Tourism
    • IT in Hospitality and Tourism Operations
    • Introduction to Accounting
    • Communication Skills (English) - Level 2
    • Tourism Behaviour
    • Marketing for the Hospitality and Tourism Industry
    • Hotel and Resort Management
    • Communication Skills (English) - Level 3 or Communication Skills (Putonghua)
    • Tourism Administration
    • Management Issues in Tourism
    • Events, Entertainment and Conventions
    • Attractions Management
    1. Individual modules can be taken on their own without any need to complete the whole Diploma.
    2. Assessment is based on assignments, tests and examination.
    3. At least 3 modules will be offered each term.

    Terms divide the year in the following way:
    from March to June, then July to October, and October / November to February. Each module comprises 11 three-hour teaching sessions and 1 three-hour final examination.

    Classes will be generally held as following tentative schedule:
    - Weekday evening : 6:45 - 9:45pm
    - Weekend daytime or evening: 2:00 - 5:00pm or 6:45 - 9:45pm

    Lectures will be scheduled to take place at HKU SPACE learning centre at Admiralty, Po Leung Kuk Communitu College Campus, Fortress Tower Campus, Island East Campus, Kowloon East Campus, Kowloon West Campus or HKU Main Campus.


     

  • Entry Requirements

    Applicants should

    • have one pass at HK Advanced Level and five passes at HKCEE Level, of which one should normally be English, or equivalent; or 
    • have four passes at the HKDSE Level, of which one should normally be English; or
    • have the HKUSPACE Certificate in Travel and Tourism Management, or equivalent; or
    • be mature age applicants (over 21 years) who do not fulfill the academic requirement but who can demonstrate relevant experience of a minimum of three years in the hospitality and tourism industry.  Such applicants may be considered, will require a pass in English at HKCEE or HKDSE or equivalent and may be required to attend an interview.
    • Specific application forms for this programme can be obtained from any HKU SPACE Enrolment Centres, or you may download the forms from this website. A complete application including the following materials should reach us on/before the application closing date:
    • a completed Application Form;
    • a completed Enrolment Form;
    • certified true copies of relevant supporting documents;
    • a non-refundable application fee of HK$150 and
    • a tuition fee of HK$7,560 for the first semester. (Please pay by cheque or credit card upon application, the amount will only be debited upon successful entry to the course)

    * The programme is designed on a modular basis, accepting three intakes of students per year in March, July and October. All fees paid are NOT refundable, unless a course is over-subscribed or cancelled. Please note that the fees quoted above apply only to Term 1 modules studied in the following intakes. These fees may be subject to revisions even after a student has submitted an application, or after you have been admitted as a student on this programme. Fees for the following terms will be advised nearer the time when you enroll on these modules.

  • Continuing Education Fund

    Eligible applications will be reimbursed 80% of theirs course fees, subject to a maximum sum of $10,000 per eligible Hong Kong resident, on successful copletion of a course on the reimbursable course list. All students who enrolled in a CEF Reimbursable Course on or after 1 February 2008 be required to attend at least 70% of the Course, and achieve at least 50% passing mark in the overall assessment of the Course.

    Applications should submit their applications as soon as they have been enrolled in, and have paid for, the first course for which reimbursement of fees is to be made and in any event, before the commencement of the course. Late applications will not be accepted by the Government.
