Course Description
This programme will introduce students various kinds of musical culture other than western classical music including African, Latin_American, South Asian and Middle-eastern music. Students will also participante in some practical skills training workshops on selected musical genres. -

Programme Structure
CURRICULUM
This is a 1 year part-time programme consists of 4 modules, namely:
- Music of African Diaspora and Latin America
Musical genres from the following areas will be introduced: Sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America. Topics include: African dance music, percussion music from Africa and Latin America, etc.
2. Popular Music
This course examines the development of North American, British and Chinese popular music by surveying key historical periods and genres which gave rise to the popular idiom. Topics will include Rock and Roll music in the west in 1960s, jazz music, cantopop in Hong Kong, etc.
3. Music of South Asia & the Middle East
Musical genres and the development of music from the follow areas will be introduced: India, Pakistan, Nepal, Afghanistan, Israel, Egypt, Iran, Iraq and the Arabic Peninsula. Topics include: ritual music of the Islamic World, Indian classical music, etc.
4. Music of China
The course will discuss specific topics covering a wide spectrum of Chinese musical culture from ancient to the modern days. These topics include Ancient Chinese Culture: guqin and the literati, Regional Opera, Musical Exchange of China and the West, etc.
